Experienced Builder & 2IC

We are looking for an experienced builder to join our team and work alongside the company director as second in charge on a high end residential project in Remuera. This is a hands on role for someone who brings confidence, maturity and strong construction knowledge to site. You will help lead the team, maintain high standards of workmanship and support the day to day delivery of a detailed architectural build.

You will work closely with the director to coordinate work on site, guide other team members and ensure construction is completed accurately and efficiently.

The ideal person will have at least four years of building experience, including experience within high end residential construction. Practical ability and proven on site experience are more important to us than formal qualifications.

  • Working alongside the director as second in charge on site
  • Supporting the day to day coordination of the project
  • Reading and interpreting architectural plans and construction details
  • Completing high quality building work across all stages of the project
  • Guiding and supporting less experienced members of the team
  • Helping maintain strong standards of workmanship, organisation and site safety
  • Identifying issues early and helping develop practical solutions
  • Communicating clearly with the wider project team, subcontractors and suppliers
  • At least four years of experience as a builder
  • Experience working on high end residential or architectural construction projects
  • Strong ability to understand plans, specifications and detailed construction information
  • Confidence working independently and making sound decisions on site
  • A positive attitude and a genuine passion for high quality construction
  • A reliable, dedicated and professional approach
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • A practical, can do mindset
  • Good physical fitness and the ability to work effectively in an active site environment

People who are committed to their health, fitness or outdoor interests often suit our team well, as they tend to bring energy, resilience and a strong work ethic to the role.

Contract rate depending on experience and capability.

WG de Gruchy Construction is one of Auckland's longest-running architectural builders. Our work is technically demanding, designed by some of the country's leading architects, and built to a standard that's been recognised at national level.

That work needs the right people for it. We're always interested in hearing from experienced tradespeople — carpenters, foremen, project managers — who want to spend their time on projects that are worth the effort.

Who we're looking for.

  • Know their trade and care about getting the detail right.

  • Can work to architectural drawings and communicate cleanly with the design team.

  • Want a project to call their own, not a different site every fortnight.

  • Hold New Zealand work eligibility and the relevant LBP or trade qualifications.

Be the guy you want to work with.

  • Attitude is contagious

As simple as greeting people with a friendly smile. We're lucky to be working, fit and healthy.

  • Safety is no accident

Toolbox meeting every Monday, 7am — be there and give input. We all want to go home safe at the end of each day.

  • Your work day matters

Show up to give 100% regardless of life's ups and downs. Your team is counting on you.

  • Work as a team

We support and respect each other, and are always stronger for it.

  • Be accountable

Own your mistakes — we all make them. It's how we handle them that defines us.

  • Ask for help

We can't help overcome issues if we don't know about them. Talking to us is an easy first step.

  • Never stop learning

Your goal is to be a master of your craft. Ask questions, support each other, and absorb all you can.

  • Clean the wheelbarrow

Self discipline in every part of your work builds the habits required for long-term success. Embrace the grind.

  • No one is above any task

Clean the loo, sweep the floor. Just get it done.

  • Our tools are our livelihood

Clean your tools at the end of each week to keep them well maintained and functional.

  • Tidy site, tidy work, tidy mind

Our commitment to building to the highest standards starts with a clean, organised worksite.

  • Put a cap on a hard week's mahi

Your contribution is appreciated. Enjoy the Friday 4pm wind-down with the rest of the team.

Because excellence matters.

PUTTING A CAP ON A HARD WEEKS MAHI

Putting a cap on the week is a tradition our team’s had since way back. It allows us to leave the week behind us so we can come back on monday with a clear head and clean gear.

Looking after the mental side of the job is just as important as the physical side, and starting the week in the right headspace helps everyone produce their best work onsite.
