The Build

What we built.

A brewery and restaurant set among the rolling vineyards of Onetangi, designed by Cheshire Architects. The build combined heavy structural elements with one-off, hand-made architectural details throughout — finishes, joinery, copper work, and millwork executed at a level closer to residential than typical hospitality construction.

All work was completed on Waiheke Island, with materials, subcontractors, and logistics planned around ferry schedules and the constraints of building off-mainland.

The Result

What was achieved.

Tantalus has become one of Waiheke Island's most distinctive hospitality destinations. The build received the National Category Winner award in the 2017 New Zealand Commercial Project Awards for Retail, alongside a Gold Award.

The judges' citation noted the combination of high-end residential builder discipline with an ambitious design emphasising one-off, hand-made detail.
